I was raised in a pretty wacky kind of far right reactionary American Christianity. Some memorable quotes from my childhood:
- "Someone needs to go shoot some Arabs" - A supposedly Christian woman, complaining about the price of gasoline.
- "That was probably written by a bunch of homosexuals." - My grandfather, enraged by an article that accurately reported the low turn out for a Pro-Life rally, informing me that one's moral opinion on abortion is most certainly tied to one's sexual orientation.
- "I'm sorry it's so complicated, but we don't mind being right." - A pastor, in a discussion of various viewpoints on the rapture.
- "We don't let our kids read books with witches." - A friend's homeschooling mother, warning against the dangers of C.S. Lewis allegorical children's fantasy novels. That same mother forbid her children from attending Sunday School at their own church, for fear of bad influences from other children. Some year's later, my friend would abandon his faith.
- "Rap music comes straight fom the pit of Hell" - A traveling Bible teacher greatly respected by my parents. One of his staff members later told me that his usual method for lesson planning was to come up wiht a list of 5 points that he wanted to make, and then he woudl instruct his staff to search out scripture verses that he could use to support his point.
- "If I've believed something my entire life, I'm just not going to change it." - A fellow church member
Fortunately, I was also exposed to Christians of many other denominations and theological persuasions, and by God's grace, was able to engage Christians who are firmly committed to the fearless pursuit of Truth and the Biblical concepts of Grace, Charity, and Freedom.
I should also say that I'm truly grateful for the Christian testimnoy and upbringing provided by my parents. They are good people who truly love Christ. It's simply a fact of the state of their world that the safest place they could find to raise their children was among people who were, though usually well-meaning, a bit wacky or misguided.
I created this webiste as a sort of journal to share my thoughts on various issues of life and faith. I'll make no promises about how the site will evolve. It's likely that the frequency and content of posts will vary widely. This exists mainly as an outlet for me, not to accomplish any specific goal or to persuade anyone to any particular point.
The best way to interact with my thoughts here is to use the Comments section of each post, but you're welcome to contact me directly via my
